When I'm doing TCAP (Tossed-Camera Aerial Photography) I like to protect the camera by enclosing it in a block of soft foam that I cut from a discarded sofa cushion. The images below show the finely-crafted foam block that I use.
The second picture shows the clamshell design that allows the block to be opened up to insert the camera, which is held snugly in a rectangular cutout.
